About the Artist
Leya Evelyn was born in Washington, DC, and educated at Brown and Yale Universities. She graduated cum laude from Brown with distinction in her field of concentration. At Yale, she studied under Josef Albers. She moved from New York City to Nova Scotia in the early 1980's.
Evelyn exhibits her work widely in Canada and the US, as well as across Europe. Main exhibitions include Saint Mary's University Art Gallery and the Second Gallery (Halifax, NS), Saint Francis Xavier University Art Gallery (Antigonish, NS), Orange Art Gallery (Ottawa, ON), Gallerie Halde in Switzerland and Galleri Saltum in Denmark.
She has received numerous grants from provincial and federal agencies, including a Canada Council Established Artist Grand in 2000. Evelyn became an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 2011. She has taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University) in Halifax, as well as privately.
